Event Recap: Essence x Northwestern Mutual Path to Power

Grapefruit Mojitos, gorgeous journals, and a plan for financial independence were all enjoyed at the Essence and Northwestern Mutual Path to Power event. It's crazy because I literally got the info on this event the day before and RSVP'd immediately. Aside from wanting to do more within the Dallas community, I was LITERALLY researching Essence opportunities in Dallas like a week ago! Talk about timing.
Path to Power is an annual event hosted by Essence and Northwestern Mutual with the key objective to help women take charge of their finances. This year's event carried the slogan,"My Wealth, My Way", which reiterated the goal for all in attendance. Essence Senior editor Charreah Jackson served as mediator during the conversation between Northwestern Mutual financial advisor Roberta Fitzgerald and Curlbox founder Myleik Teele.

The panelists were transparent about their journeys with financial literacy and I really appreciated it! They bother dropped many gems regarding the importance of saving and managing money so that you are taken care of in the long run.

"You want to spend life living, but we have to plan for it" Roberta Fitzgerald

While I don't normally attend event like this, I was very happy to be in a room full of black women with a desire to better themselves. Fiscal responsibility is something I'm so passionate about because I know that for the life I want to build and legacy I want to leave, my finances will matter. I'm also aware of the importance learning how to handle my finances as an African American due to the fact we as a culture tend to find ourselves behind our peers in economic success.

Events like these really matter because they help a lot of people become aware of realities. I had the benefit of attending college and going to many events focused on financial literacy, but I know some in the audience didn't. It's important for women, black women, to hear from their peers that we have to do more and actually plan and save. I'm thankful to have attended because our panelist and Northwestern Mutual did their best to give me tools to "Finance my freedom."
