Dear Influencers…

I love you guys a lot. You're literally the sisters (or brothers) of bloggers and we connected. Our passions and dedication have led us into this wonderful industry where we work together for both ourselves and brands. However…as your sister, I want to let it be known that it bothers me when yall referrer to yourselves as bloggers. There, I said it.

DON'T chew my head off. I am no gatekeeper to blogging, but I found myself on a 3+ minute rant about this the other day and decided to share my thoughts. Am I trying to keep people out of the blogging community? No! That's the furthest of my intentions. It's more of being clear with viewers/readers in regards to the type of content that is to be expected.

A blogger blogs on a site/channel and an influencer influences on various sites and channels. I found online, via The Atlantic, that that a blog is “a log of thoughts and writing posted publicly on the World Wide Web,” and couldn't agree more. You don't have to add that component to your business as an influencer. If you like to write and share a bit more, I get it but I’ve noticed its quite a few that don't.

What irks my soul is when I find a really cool Instagram and the person says they’re a blogger. I then click the link in their bio, read the about section, and proceed to find only 3 blog posts from six months ago, despite them being very active and growing on social media. It sucks. I then have wasted my time trying to read their work, when in fact, I’m just meant to see their work. I’m cool with that and will definitely still follow, I just wish they would’ve kept the “blogger” label out.

I don't want to step on anyone’s toes, but I also wanted to share MY grievances. I'm all for supporting others that follow their dreams, so I really don't want this to come off as me complaining about influencers taking viewers or something. That's not it at all. I just want everyone to call themselves what they are, so it's no confusion. And that's coming from me as a viewer and not a blogger.
