The Value of Values

With tomorrow being the first day of the new year, I wanted to take some time and discuss something that has been on my mind for a minute…values.
Value • noun
"A person's principles or standards of behavior; one's judgment of what is important in life."

I think it is very important for people to identify what values they hold important to them in order to have a life they appreciate. I once read an article on The Man Repeller about a woman choosing to have a family instead of focus on her career and it really made me think on my values further. Without a doubt, I would say my top three would be love, family, and happiness.

Within the article, the woman noticed how she was able to understand her decision after she realized how important love was to her. It served as a basis for all of her big decision in life and as I thought about my own values, I drew conclusions as to why I chose my top three:

Love is the foundation for a lot of my actions. I know God is love and I know as a believer, it is my job to love. PLUS, its so comforting and makes me feel good.
Family –including friends that I view as family- is what keeps me grounded. I’m thankful I didn't get to choose them because God blessed me with exactly who I needed. I appreciate the fact I have these set people to do life with.
Happiness, ah my ultimate goal. I generally like to be happy and try to avoid things that don't make me happy. While I’m aware life isn’t always sunshine, I think its important to absorb and radiate as much happiness as possible.

This understanding of my own values and how they play apart in my choices triggered my thoughts more and as I pondered and asked my family, I learned most of us make decisions subconsciously based on our personal values. While I do believe our personal values effect the choices we make for ourselves more, I also realized how valuable they can be to others as well. Every choice we make has some type of effect on life as we know it.

This year, I’m hoping to make decisions and take actions with my values being a key focus. Anyone that knows me knows I strive for happiness, but that's a personal thing and something I want to make more of a outward thing too. Love is another value that I want to pour out of me. As a believer of Christ, I know its my job to love my brothers and sisters, however…it can be hard. We all fall short, but I REALLY want to try and give it my all. I want to radiate love and try my hardest to love others the way Christ loves me.

Do you have any values that you care to bring into the New Year?
